If you are experiencing thinning hair, there are several things you can do about it:

Take control of managing your hair loss

Minoxidil for women
Minoxidil is a medically proven treatment for hereditary hair loss in women. It has been medically proven to work for 4 out of 5 people. Minoxidil is a solution which is applied topically twice a day.

Clinical research shows that minoxidil for women can slow or stop hair loss in 4 out of 5 women, while some can actually regrow hair.

While you can find out more about minoxidil for women from your pharmacist or pharmacy assistant (or ask for a minoxidil brochure), it is available off the shelf without prescription or consultation at pharmacies throughout Malaysia.

Visit Your Hairdresser
A good stylist will be able to cut and style your hair to maximise it. Talk to your hairdresser about your concerns and ask their advice on a good volumising cut or about what will work best for your hair.

•
A body wave can thicken hair.
•
A layered cut can make hair look thicker.
•
Short hair often appears to give hair more volume than long hair, which weighs down, exposing the scalp.
•
A hair colour that is closer to your scalp colour makes the contrast between your hair and scalp less noticeable, but ask your hairdresser to use a mild colourant.

Ask your hairdresser for advice on products and treatments

•
Choose a gentle shampoo.
•
If you use conditioner, make sure it is the right one for your hair type as some can weigh the hair down. Make sure you rinse it out thoroughly.
•
For styling your hair there are hundreds of types of hair mousse, gel and spray on the market, so it is important to choose one that is best for your hair type.
•
Although perms or waves can enhance thinning hair, they can sometimes damage it, so make sure you get advice on what is best for you and have any treatment done by an experienced professional.
•
Hair colouring can hide thinning hair to a large degree (e.g. fair hair on a white scalp doesn't look as thin as dark hair on a white scalp) but remember that harsh chemicals in some hair colours and dyes can damage hair.
•
Be aware that tight braiding or 'cornrowing', such as the Bo Derek look in the movie '10' can, over time cause hair loss, because the hair follicles become irritated by the constant pressure of the braid. If this irritation is sustained for long periods of time, hair loss can be permanent.
•
Similarly, if you have thinning hair be wary of hair extensions. Even though they will make your hair look fuller, over time they can cause the hair follicles to become irritated and eventually die. In extreme cases this will lead to permanent hair loss.

What not to do:

•
Blow dry on a high heat often, as this can break the hair
•
Use rollers or tightly braid your hair, as these can break the hair.
•
Use harsh chemical dyes or perms, as they can damage the scalp. If in doubt, ask your hair dresser for advice.
